Energy Conservation

Q: How much electricity does the average household in the U.S. use per year?

A: 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh)

DID YOU KNOW: Buying and using fluorescent bulbs can expend 75% LESS energy?

Save energy and help the environment by:

  • Turning off lights when rooms are not in use; using extra lights only when needed.
  • Replacing incandescent bulbs with more energy efficient compact flourescent (CLF) bulbs. CFLs use 75% less energy than regular bulbs and will become industry standard as incandescent bulbs begin to be phased out in 2012 due to a Federal mandate passed in December 2007. • Increasing your air conditioner thermostat by 3 degrees and reduce the production of carbon dioxideover by 900 pounds each year!
  • Working with PG&E to make your home more energy efficient by visiting the SmartEnergy Center. You can save money on your energy bill and learn more about rebates that are available.
  • Unplugging electronic devices when not in use, including:
    • Transformers that power electronic devices (e.g. cell phones, computer printers)
    • Electronic devices that use electricity even when they are turned off (e.g. televisions, stereos, VCR’s, DVD players, computers)
    • This can easily be done by plugging electronic devices into a power strip with an on/off switch; switch the power “off” when not in use.
    • If you must leave your computer on, place it in a sleep mode when not in use.
