Fireworks are Extremely Dangerous and IllegalThis holiday weekend, please remember that fireworks are illegal and can result in dangerous fires and serious injuries. This year, the danger of fires caused by fireworks is extreme due to unprecedented drought conditions, large grass crops, and abundant vegetation. It is critically important to take precautions and do your part to prevent wildfires.
Fines will be issued to anyone using, possessing, storing, or selling illegal fireworks. In Santa Clara County, property owners can be held responsible and fined for the illegal use of fireworks on their property. If there is an active fire or medical emergency, residents should call 9-1-1.
Community members are encouraged to participate in safe, legal, and fun activities to celebrate Independence Day. Happy Fourth of July!

Community Harvest UpdatesThank you to everyone who joined the City of Saratoga for this year’s Community Harvest! Photos from this year’s event are available on the City’s Facebook page.
Due to a variety of unexpected factors, such as the orchard producing an overall smaller crop of fruit and the rapidly changing weather during apricot season, there were fewer opportunities to participate in the harvest than expected. There will be no more opportunities to harvest apricots this year. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank the community for understanding.
Please visit www.saratoga.ca.us/subscribe and sign up for the City newsletter to be informed of any future opportunities.

Initial Draft of Housing Element Available for Public ReviewThe initial draft of the City’s 2023-2031 Housing Element is now available for public review on the City website. California jurisdictions are required by the State to update their Housing Element, a blueprint for future housing development, every 8 years to plan for projected housing needs. The draft Housing Element for the City of Saratoga would allow for over 1,700 new homes to be built in Saratoga between 2023 and 2031 based on State housing projections. A public comment period on the initial draft is required before the City can submit the Housing Element to the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) for preliminary review. An updated draft along with the Environmental Impact Report will both be available for public comment in late fall/early winter 2022. Once the draft Housing Element has been updated to address HCD comments, Planning Commission and City Council hearings will be scheduled for final review and adoption. Written comments (including name, affiliation, and contact information) on the initial draft can be submitted through July 5, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. to Community Development Director Debbie Pedro by email at dpedro@saratoga.ca.us or by mail to:
City of Saratoga Community Development Department, Debbie Pedro 13777 Fruitvale Avenue Saratoga CA 95070 The community can also speak on the initial draft during at the City Council Meeting on July 6, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. Join the meeting using the following information:

Saratoga Creek Hazard Tree Removal and Restoration Valley Water is scheduled to begin its third and final phase of tree removals on August 1 for the Saratoga Creek Hazard Tree Removal and Restoration Project. The project is located along Saratoga Creek between Cox Avenue and Prospect Road.
Valley Water has removed 104 trees over the last three years. This fall, 32 trees will be removed between the Brookside Club and Prospect High School. The eucalyptus grove in this area is infected with a wood softening fungus called laetiporus. Laetiporus is a brown rot fungus that greatly increase the risk of large branch and whole tree failure by breaking down the cellulose in the wood.
The goals of the project are to expand and enhance the native mixed riparian habitat and reduce the risk of bank erosion or destabilization. The restoration of the creek area will be monitored by the Regional Water Quality Control board for a minimum of 10 years to ensure the success of the project. More information can be found on the Valley Water website.
