City of Saratoga Neighborhood Watch

Tips & Trends

With school in session, more cars are on the road as parents get kids to and from school. There are also more pedestrians and bicyclists on the roads, especially around schools.

Help make the roads safe for everyone by following these tips:

  • Take your time. School zone speed limits are 25 miles per hour unless posted otherwise.
  • Be extra vigilant of pedestrians and bicyclists, who are unpredictable and move quickly.
  • Avoid blocking crosswalks when stopped, so students on foot or bicycles have a safe path of travel.
  • Focus on the road. Distracted drivers have less time to react.
  • Never pass a school bus when its warning lights are flashing. It’s not only illegal, but dangerous.

Personal Preparedness

During an area-wide disaster, it may be days before emergency responders arrive in your neighborhood. Will you and your family be ready?

  • Sign up for emergency alerts at You’ll also receive instructions during and after disasters, including information about evacuations, shelters, food and medical supplies.
  • Prepare multiple disaster kits and keep them in your home, car, and at work.
  • Learn how to use your fire extinguisher. Every month, make it a habit to check the pressure gauge to ensure it’s in working order. Replace when expired.
  • Set up an emergency plan and evacuation route for your family. Review and practice your plan every year so no one will forget.
  • If you’d like to learn more, the Santa Clara County Fire Department organizes a monthly FREE three-hour class on personal emergency preparedness. For more information, visit
