Structure Hardening Incentive Program Application

  1. About the Structure Hardening

Structure hardening refers to the use of building materials and design to increase a building’s wildfire resistance. During wildfire events, structures are most often ignited by direct exposure to flames, radiant heat, and flying embers. CAL FIRE has identified roofs as being the most vulnerable part of a structure, particularly those made of wood or shingles. Another vulnerability is single-pane windows that can break as a result of heat, allowing embers to enter a structure. Installing a Class A roof and multi-paned tempered glass windows are two of the low-cost structure hardening retrofits recommended by CAL FIRE.

    Rebate

To encourage property owners in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) area of Saratoga, the City offers the following rebates:

    • Up to $5,000 for replacing non-Class A roof with a Class A roof (Wood shingled roof assemblies that meet the Class A rating are not eligible for rebates)
    • Up to $5,000 for replacing non-tempered glass windows with multi-pane, tempered glass windows
    • Up to $10,000 for replacing non-Class A roof with a Class A roof AND replacing non-tempered glass windows with multi-pane, tempered glass windows

To qualify, a property must be located within City limits and the WUI. Funding is not available for improvements that are otherwise required by law. Wood shingled roof assemblies that meet the Class A rating are not eligible for rebates.

Applications may be submitted after receiving the necessary City permit(s), work has been completed, and within 30-days of passing final inspection. Applications must include a copy of proof of payment for improvements, copy of final inspection, and a W-9 form to be considered.

Rebates are issued on a first-come, first-served basis until program funding is depleted. Rebates may not exceed the total cost of improvements.
